it's a little bit weird to me that i'm an english major who had really never read austen before this year, but stick with me. when we were discussing northanger abbey, all i could think was that i wish i HAD. i wish that i could have formed my opinion of her writing away from the really analytical and "relating to these characters as if they're your friends is bad" approach that my professor is taking. in truth, i love marianne and brandon! i keep thinking of them and how their relationship would exist in different universes, partly inspired by a fanfiction assignment i had to do. i don't regret much but i wish that this hadn't been my introduction to austen's novels.
i plan to read them (and some other books, hopefully) on my own over summer break. i'm absolutely excited for that.
